‘A Suitable Boy’ costumes highlighting charecters

I must admit I did not remeber much of the book, I remeber I had the book and did read it in parts but didnt remeber anything. For once, I was glad taht was the case, there was no room for any expectation or comparison.

The series started off with a wedding scene and what I noticed was the costume kind of also gave away the kind of personalisties we were to epxerience in the series. For instance, the sister in law of Lata, Meenakshi was dressed in a benarasi saree with a low cut blouse, oozing confidence and looking sexy at the same time. Every charecter had a distinct look and very classy to say the least. When Tabu walked in, playing Saeeda Begum, she looked beleivingly the part. As we go along, the costumes reveal much more of the charecters.

We see Lata in the best of linen sarees mostly in pastel hues, the men are dressed impecably well. Mann, in his right fitted kurtas and very stylish shwals or scarfs around his neck. All the three suitors have a very distinct style too. While, Kabir Durrani looks smart in his khadi shirts and loose pants, we see Amit in mostly linen blasers and Mr. Khanna in proper suits and boots.

The costume design really accentuate the story each charter is telling and I what is remarkable is the sense and sensibility in choosing just the right look and style in each scene.

Lata’s wedding scene stole my heart, you would have never seen a bride in a linen benarasi, she looks stunning and classy. If I were to dress people up, this would be the standard that I would like to achieve. So realy, so stylish and each one looking the part.

What a delight it was to watch the series and get inspired by Arjun Bhasin’s excellent cosume design.
